This event, Saturday September 7, 2024, marks the 125th year anniversary of Marshall “Major “Taylor winning the world 1-mile championship in Montreal. Taylor won the one-mile sprint on August 10, 1899, to become the first African American to win a world championship in cycling and was our nation's first African American sports hero.
The Major Taylor Trail Keepers bicycle ride in Chicago and its southern suburbs featured a revitalized stretch of the Major Taylor Trail and serves as a fundraiser for the trail's upkeep.
Registration and check in is from 8-8:30am. A tribute to Major Taylor and special presentation is from 8:30-9am. All rides start at 9:00 a.m. iat grove 16 in the Dan Ryan Woods Forest Preserve.
This event is organized by the Major Taylor Trail Keepers Chicago, Friends of the Major Taylor Trail, and Major Taylor Cycling Club Chicago in conjuction with Forest Preserves of Cook Couunty.
